Copal and Amber are like distant cousins. They both come from tree resin, but they are at different stages of fossilization. Copal is younger than Amber and comes primarily from tropical trees and can take thousands to tens of thousands of years for it to form (Amber is much older).
Copal is classified as a developing type of resin that is in the initial phases of fossilization. Its makeup is distinguished by a greater concentration of volatile organic compounds, specifically terpenes. It may also incorporate a small amount of water within its structure.
